Cal/OSHA

The Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), better known as Cal/OSHA, protects and improves the health and safety of working men and women in California.

Cal/OSHA Safety & Health Training Requirements

California Indoor Heat Illness Prevention Standard

California’s Indoor Heat Illness Prevention Standard (Title 8, Section 3396) protects employees working in indoor environments where temperatures reach 82°F or higher. Covered employers must implement an Indoor Heat Illness Prevention Plan, provide access to drinking water and cool-down areas, monitor workplace temperatures, train employees and supervisors, and establish emergency response procedures to help prevent heat-related illnesses. For outdoor workplaces, refer to California’s Outdoor Heat Illness Prevention Standard (Title 8, Section 3395).

California Workplace Violence Prevention (SB 553)

California’s Workplace Violence Prevention law (SB 553), codified in Labor Code Section 6401.9, requires most employers to establish, implement, and maintain a written Workplace Violence Prevention Plan (WVPP). Covered employers must provide initial and annual employee training, maintain a violent incident log, evaluate and correct workplace violence hazards, and review their plan at least annually or whenever workplace conditions or incidents warrant. These requirements have been in effect since July 1, 2024, and are enforced by Cal/OSHA.

Worker Safety & Health in Wildfire Regions

California’s Wildfire Smoke regulation (Title 8, Section 5141.1) protects employees who work in areas affected by wildfire smoke. The standard requires employers to monitor air quality, communicate wildfire smoke hazards, provide employee training, implement exposure controls, and provide appropriate respiratory protection when required to reduce employee exposure to harmful particulate matter.
